The history of KPOP girl groups, Part 4-3 Fourth generation girl group (2020)

In 2020, there were difficulties all over the world because of COVID-19. The same was true of Kpop. Due to social distancing, performances and events were canceled and they had difficulties.

In addition, CD sales increased in the music market, where streaming became the main source of revenue. With the global popularity of K-POP, new girl groups have also actively sought overseas expansion. It has begun targeting not only domestic charts but also overseas charts.

The number of girl groups was also around 10, but the debut flow in 2020 was reduced to four to six.

It is also the year when many online girl groups that did not have the opportunity to breathe with the audience at the concert site debuted.

Characteristics of the 4th generation girl group.

Girl groups making their debut in Korea are growing in such fierce competition. After 2020, girl groups often make their debut as a 4-member or 6-member group by downsizing their size. In addition, member configurations are often multinational. Most of them are in the form of additional foreign members being put into one or two Korean members.

The surge in album sales such as CDs seems to be largely due to the influence of COVID-19. People who couldn’t go to the concert hall relieved their desire by purchasing the album. If consumers had difficulty not being able to see the performance, girl groups had girl groups that they had never seen on stage with audiences.

n fact, Espa once gave an interview in 2022 that it felt different to stand in front of the audience for the first time on an offline stage. There is still a controversy over his singing ability. It may seem surprising to see him performing a difficult song while dancing the intense choreography, but he may have been helped by mechanical tuning.

Thanks to BTS’ global success, girl groups are also enjoying global popularity. Among the 4th generation girl groups, BLACKPINK is the most successful girl group in the global market. It is also listed in the Billboard rankings, and fandom is forming around the world.

The success of the girl group may be the success of the entire group, but I think it may be more important for the group members to personally feel success and happiness.
